Frequently asked questions

What is online therapy?

Online therapy or "telehealth" is a way to provide mental health services via the internet. Sessions are conducted over a secure platform similar to Zoom. Providing services this way opens up clients' options and limits common accessibility barriers.

Do you offer in person sessions?

No. Multiracial Mental Health currently only offers online sessions.

Do you offer phone consultations prior to intake?

To ensure we are best able to serve our clients within the short window of business hours available, we  currently only offer consultation via email where we are happy to answer any questions you may have prior to scheduling an intake.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is what is referred to as an "intake". In this session, we will go over basic "housekeeping" items such as:

-Ensuring policies are clear

-Understanding how to navigate any technical issues

-Answering any questions you may have about the process

The main areas of focus of the intake are:

-Establishing goals for treatment

-Assessing for any present diagnoses

-Gathering a history of your presenting concerns and what has/hasn't worked for you in attempting to address them in the past

-Assessing for any safety concerns and creating a safety plan if necessary

It is also especially important that you feel comfortable and feel a sense of rapport with your therapist. Part of the intake process is both the therapist and the client determining if their personalities and communication styles are well suited to work together.

What are common issues/concerns you work with?

We specialize in work with interracial couples, ethnic minority mental health, racial trauma, parenting, anxiety, depression and trauma.

Multiracial Mental Health is LGBTQIA+ welcoming and affirming.

Are there any issues or types of clients you do not work with?

It is important that therapists provide services within their "scope of practice" and areas of expertise. Because of this, there are some areas we do not offer services in.

While we do have expertise and experience in child mental health for children as young as 3 years old, online counseling with younger children may not be suited for all situations. Therefore, we currently do not work with children under the age of 13 individually.

We also do not write letters for Emotional Support Animals (ESA), conduct legal evaluations or provide psychological assessments.

We do not provide treatment for primary concerns of Autism, eating disorders, substance abuse, psychotic disorders (ie. Schizophrenia) or Sexual Recovery Services (SRS), though these may be secondary concerns related to other treatment goals.

Due to state licensing laws, we can also only provide services for people physically located in the states of Washington and Oregon at the time of the session.

Do you take insurance?

Multiracial Mental Health is currently in-network  with the following insurance companies:

Lyra

Premera

Regence

First Choice Health

Kaiser Permanente of WA

We are considered out-of-network  for all other insurances at this time. Some (but not all) insurances will reimburse you for services rendered out-of-network. In this case,  we can provide you with a Superbill for the services you receive and pay out of pocket for to request reimbursement and/or application to your yearly deductible.

We strongly suggest reaching out to your insurance company and asking the following questions before scheduling your first appointment if you would like to go this route:

  • Am I able to see an out of network provider for Outpatient Mental/Behavioral Health services?
  • Do you cover Outpatient Mental/Behavioral Health Services provided via telehealth?
  • Will you reimburse me for Outpatient Mental/Behavioral Health Services I pay for out of pocket if I submit a Superbill? What does that process look like?
  • Are Outpatient Mental/Behavioral Health Services subject to my deductible?
  • Do I have co-insurance for Outpatient Mental/Behavioral Health Services?
  • Do I have a yearly cap on the amount of sessions I am covered for?

Please keep in mind that Couples Counseling is typically not covered by insurance (Lyra is an exception) and those sessions are billed out of pocket at the full rate.

Please feel free to email with any additional questions you may have.
